Check out the sale on tomatoes ($.99/pound) at Tomãto-Tomäto! Double K Farms has a sale going on their frozen soups, too! Only $2.50 each! Frozen pesto is on sale for $3.50 each. A little goes a long way.

Not only is our dacha, a Russian expression for a home in the country, a getaway, a garden, and a farm, it is also a concept project for us. More...

Fall, 2009
Some final pics of fall, of the cats, and of the last harvests are seen here. We also finished the sauna and are well on our way to having a bathtub! Soon, the Russian banya will be done!
Since my last posting, Double K Farms has suffered some serious losses...first, a raccoon got all but one of our six kittens and just last week, a fox (we think) got all nine of our beloved chickens. Then, just this week, our lovely Lola (the final kitten) succombed to a virus. In better news, we got two acres of aronia berries planted and the weather has been great!

Fall, 2009

CURRENT MOON
Sky Calendar: Observing Events for January 2010

MOON PHASES

Thu., January 7
Last Quarter Moon, 5:39 a.m.

The Last or Third Quarter Moon rises before midnight. It sets about 3 p.m.

Fri., January 15
New Moon, 2:11 a.m.

Because of the angle the ecliptic forms with the horizon this month, the Moon was readily visible only one day before New Moon, almost directly above the rising Sun. This works against us past New Moon, and it will be at least a couple of days before you can make out the thin crescent Moon low on the southwestern horizon.

Sat., January 23
First Quarter Moon, 5:53 a.m.

The First Quarter Moon is in the southern sky at sunset, and sets quite near midnight.

Sat., January 30
Full Moon, 1:16 a.m.

The Full Moon of January is known as the Old Moon. Other names are Wolf Moon, Moon After Yule, and Ice Moon. In Hindi it is known as Paush Poornima. Its Sinhala (Buddhist) name is Duruthu Poya.

PLANETS

Mercury is an "morning star" for the second half of this month, but poorly placed for observers in the Northern Hemisphere.

Venus  is now behind the Sun, and is not visible.

Mars begins the month in Leo, but soon moves into Cancer. Opposition is on January 29, but Mars is closest to Earth on January 27, 99.33 million kilometres away from Earth. It is close to the Moon on January 3.

Jupiter is low in the southwest at sunset, and soon will disappear behind the Sun. It is close to the Moon on January 17.

Saturn now rises just before midnight, and is visible in the south the rest of the night. It is in Virgo for the whole of January. Its rings are beginning to open again. It is close to the Moon on January 6.

The Sky Calendar is provided by Starry Night Education, the leader in space science curriculum solutions.
